OU T171 You, Your Computer and The Net Introduction

I studied the 2001 presentation of OU T171 You, Your Computer and The Net. The T171 Course was divided into the following three Modules.

T171 Module 1

T171 Module 1 - basic use of word processors, spreadsheets, office software, e-mail, conferencing particularly FirstClass the OU's email and conferencing system. From there you move on to constructing your very first simple web page. If your a regular computer user like me this part of the course will not take much time at all, however those new to computing on my course found this extremely time consuming.

T171 Module 2

T171 Module 2 - tells the story of the PC, the personalities, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and many more plus the work of Xerox PARC and Intel and the microprocessor that made it all possible.

T171 Module 3

T171 Module 3 - tells the story of the Internet from its earliest beginning's as APRANET to the Net as we know it today. You will learn about the personalities who started it all off and the technologies that enabled it to happen (not very technical).

The 2002 T171 presentation was changed from the one I did - the original T171 Module 1 has been dropped and has become the basis of TU170. The New Module 1 is now about the PC industry, Module 2 is about the Internet and WWW and Module 3 is about eBusiness.

General Hints and Tips

If your stuck try putting your problem to your T171 conference better still use the National conference and you should receive help quite quickly - I've seen a problem go on the National conference and an answer appearing in minutes. Don't worry if you think your problem is trivial as you can almost guarantee others have the same or similar problem.

The T171 ECA at the end of the course requires that you show your work in completing the exercises found each of the modules coursework - save these in HTML format as you complete them - it will save time in the when you come to complete the T171 ECA. I used my-enotes which is a free plugin for Internet Explorer and allowed me to capture textual information in HTML format whilst browsing and evaluate later at my leisure.

When your searching the Net as you will have to do on this course make note of any useful sites you come across - they may be useful in the future especially for the T171 ECA.

I have compiled most of the links I found into useful stuff for the T171 Modules - they were all working when I wrote this but links die from time to time, if you find any links not working or would like some added please contact me. View the Useful Links.
